B.E. Council Approves Mosquito Contract, Discusses KBEW Letter

At their meeting on Monday night, the Blue Earth City Council approved the mosquito spraying contract with Mosquito Control of Iowa.  The contract will run from June 1st through September 15th of this year at a cost of $15,250, which is the same cost the city paid for the contracted services last year.

The Council also discussed a letter sent to KBEW Radio, which was signed by Councilman John Husiman and others.  The letter encouraged advertisers to spend their dollars elsewhere and listeners to refrain from listening to the stations because of a news program aired on 1560-AM.  The discussion lasted about an hour.  The Council took no vote on whether to remove Husiman from the Council or the EDA Committee.  Councilman Husiman asked for permission to address the EDA Committee at their next meeting on February 11th and explain his position and reasons for signing the letter.

Council Members also approved an amended sub-section of the city’s code concerning dog and cat registrations and received an update on the building of a new animal shelter.  The Council looked at several options available to the City and the Humane Society, but took no action.
