MN Legislature Discusses Bill to Track Heath Care Entities

A new bill in the state legislature aims to keep track of health care entities across the state and help lawmakers better understand why costs might be too expensive.  The bill would establish a “Minnesota Commission for Equitable Heath Care Services”, a commission that would be tasked with checking in on health care providers to held them accountable.

The commission would work with the state auditor to obtain information on things like corporate profits and issue recommendations to the legislature based on findings.

The bill heard a wide array of feedback in its Tuesday hearings.  Some showed support for a bill they view as an accountability measure.  Others worried that the bill would add work for the state auditor or that it would become a partisan way of mandating state health care.

The bill was laid over in the Senate State and Local Government Committee for inclusion in a future omnibus bill.

Minnesota Switching to a New Weather Alert System from the NWS

Minnesota is using a new weather alert system from the National Weather Service for its severe weather alert sirens.

With the old system, the whole county would be alerted if there was severe weather, but with advances in technology, it is now possible to be more targeted with the sirens, limiting them to only the affected areas.

The state is running tornado drills April 11th in the afternoon and evening to give everyone a change to practice their severe weather response plan.

Officials Investigating Death and Fire in Rural Titonka on Sunday

A man is dead after an early morning fire in rural Titonka Sunday.

The Kossuth County Law Enforcement Center says it received a 911 call around 4:25am from the 3400 block of 210th Avenue.  A woman reported a fire and said she was woken up by the power going out in her house and noticed the glow of a fire at a workshop outbuilding.

The woman says her husband had been out in the workshop earlier because he couldn’t sleep and she did not know where he was.

Titonka Fire and EMS were sent to the scene and Kossuth County EMS and Bancroft Fire Department were requested to assist.

First responders arrived to find the outbuilding consumed by flames and 45 year old Brian Leroy Janssen dead inside the structure.

The Kossuth County Medical Examiner’s Office and State Fire Marshall’s Office were called in to help investigate the incident and determine the cause of Janssen’s death.

Kossuth County Emergency Management and the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
