Several Area Departments Respond to Sunday Morning Business Fire in Mapleton

A fire Sunday morning destroyed a building at Ero-Guard in Mapleton, which makes straw based erosion prevention mats used on highway construction projects and other projects.

Mapleton Fire Chief Ben Froehlich said a passerby called in the fire, at 412 Highway 22 South, at 9:20am.

No one was injured, but one firefighter was treated for exertion.

It took several hours to knock down the fire and crews stayed on the scene into the evening because a lot of large straw bales were stored in the facility and there was a concern for possible flare ups.

Crews from Easton, St. Clair, Winnebago, Lake Crystal, Pemberton, Wells, Minnesota Lake, Faribault County, Good Thunder, Amboy and Vernon Center assisted.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating and no damage estimate was immediately available.
