MN & Iowa Farmers Nearing Planting Completion as Drought Concerns Grow in Some Areas

Producers in Minnesota averaged 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending June 11th, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Some areas of the state have become very dry and need rain with topsoil moisture supplies rated 41% short to very short and 59% adequate to surplus.

Corn emergence reached 94% complete, 6 days ahead of last year and 4 days ahead of the 5 year average.  Corn condition was 75% good to excellent.

Soybean planting was virtually complete at 99%, 12 days ahead of last year and 9 days ahead of the 5 year average.  Soybean emergence reached 91%.  Soybean condition was 75% good to excellent.

Iowa saw another dry week last week, with some isolated rain showers.  Some farmers were finishing up soybean planting, as row crop planting activities near conclusion.  Drought concerns are increasing with topsoil moisture condition was rated 60% short to very short and 40% adequate to surplus.

Corn emergence is nearing completion at 98%, 1 week ahead of last year and 8 days ahead of the 5 year average.  Corn condition declined to 70% good to excellent.

Ninety five percent of soybeans have emerged, 11 days ahead of last year and 2 weeks ahead of average.  Soybean condition dropped to 66% good to excellent.
