MN & Iowa Farmers Take Advantage of Good Weather to Advance Harvest Progress

Minnesota had 6.4 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending October 9th, according to the USDA.  Fall harvest is well underway and so far the weather has been mostly cooperative.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 10% very short, 34% short, 54% adequate and 2% surplus.

Corn mature or beyond was at 92%.  Corn harvested for grain was at 14%, two days behind the 5 year average.  Corn for silage was 94% harvested.  Corn condition was 62% good to excellent.

Soybeans dropping leaves or beyond was at 96%.  Soybeans harvested was at 63%, five days behind last year but just over a week ahead of the 5 year average.  Soybean condition was 64% good to excellent.

In Iowa, the USDA says that harvest progressed quickly, with farmers taking advantage of 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork last week. 

Topsoil moisture condition was rated 19% very short, 39% short, 41% adequate and 1% surplus.

Corn in the mature stage or beyond was at 92%, 2 days behind last year but 5 days ahead of the 5 year average.  Harvest of the state’s corn crop reached 23% complete, 3 days behind last year but 3 days ahead of average.  Moisture content of field corn being harvest for grain was 20%.  Corn condition rose slightly to 63% good to excellent.

Soybeans dropping leave or beyond were at 93%, 5 days behind last year but 2 days ahead of the 5 year average.  Iowa farmers were able to harvest 29% of the soybean crop last week to reach 55% complete, 9 days ahead of average.  Soybean condition was rated 62% good to excellent.
