MN & Iowa Farmers See Most of Last Week Suitable for Fieldwork

Minnesota farmers had 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending July 24th, according to the USDA.

Weekend rain provided some much needed moisture in some areas, but more rain would be welcome throughout most of the state.  Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 24% short to very short, 70% adequate and 6% surplus.

Corn silking was at 49%, 6 days behind average.  Corn condition was 8% poor to very poor, 29% fair and 63% good to excellent.

Soybeans blooming or beyond reached 69%, slightly behind the 5 year average.  Soybeans setting pods reached 18%.  Soybean condition was rated 6% poor to very poor, 32% fair, and 62% good to excellent.

In Iowa, the USDA says, limited rain over much of the state resulted in 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork.

Topsoil moisture condition was rated 38% short to very short, 61% adequate and 1% surplus.

Corn silking or beyond was at 66%, 4 days behind last year and 3 days behind the 5 year average, with 8% of the corn crop has reached the dough stage, 5 days behind last year and 2 days behind average.  Corn condition was rated 80% good to excellent.

Soybeans blooming reached 72%, 1 week behind last year and 2 days behind average, with 32% of the soybean crop setting pods, 5 days behind last year and 1 day behind the 5 year average.  Iowa’s soybean condition rating was 75% good to excellent.
