MN & Iowa Farmers Nearing the End of Spring Planting According to the USDA

According to the USDA, conditions allowed 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork last week in Minnesota.  Strong storms in parts of the state caused some barn and building damage.

Corn planting reached 93% complete, 21 days behind last year and 5 days behind the 5 year average.  Corn emergence was at 66%.  Corn condition was rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 36% fair, 53% good and 7% excellent.

Soybean planting was 72% complete, 25 days behind last year and 12 days behind average.  Soybean emergence reached 39%. 

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 0% very short, 2% short, 69% adequate and 29% surplus.

In Iowa, the USDA says that a few days of light rainfall resulted in 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork last week.

Planting is almost complete with 98% of Iowa’s corn crop planted, 11 days behind last year, but 3 days ahead of the 5 year average.  Corn emergency is at 87%, 6 days behind last year and 1 day behind average.  Corn condition is rated 86% good to excellent.

Soybean planting was 94% complete, 5 days behind last year but 6 days ahead of the 5 year average.  Soybean emergence was at 69%, 1 week behind last year but 1 day ahead of average.  Iowa’s first soybean condition rating of the year was 2% poor, 16% fair, 67% good and 15% excellent.

Topsoil moisture conditions were rated 2% very short, 12% short, 78% adequate and 8% surplus.
