MN & Iowa Farmers Finally Made a Bit of Planting Progress Last Week

Some warmer and drier weather for Minnesota farmers yielded 2.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 8th, according to the USDA.

Corn planting reached 9% complete, compared to 48% last year and the 5 year average of 81%.  Soybean planting was 2% complete, compared to 59% last year and the 5 year average of 25%.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 4% short, 69% adequate and 26% surplus.

In Iowa, farmers found 1.8 days suitable for fieldwork.

Farmers made some progress last week with 14% of corn planted, which is two weeks behind both last year and the 5 year average.  Only 7% of Iowa’s soybeans have been planted, 12 days behind last year and 11 days behind average. 

Topsoil moisture condition was rated 1% very short, 9% short, 73% adequate and 17% surplus.
