Recent rainfall has helped ease drought conditions in parts of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa, but much of the region remains drier than normal heading into August.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows most of southern Minnesota is in moderate drought, with a large area of severe drought stretching across south central and southeastern Minnesota. Nearly 76% of the state remains in drought, including about 35% in severe drought.
Closer to home, communities across southern Minnesota, including portions of Faribault, Martin, Freeborn, Blue Earth, Watonwan and nearby counties, continue to deal with moderate drought conditions, while areas farther east remain in severe drought.
Across the border in northern Iowa, conditions have improved. Most of the region, including Kossuth, Winnebago, Worth, Hancock and nearby counties, is now considered moderately dry or in moderate drought, with no severe or extreme drought reported anywhere in the state.
More than half of Iowa is now free of drought, although nearly 46% remains at least abnormally dry.
