The latest U.S. Drought Monitor, released Thursday, shows drought conditions changed little across Minnesota and Iowa during the past week, with some modest improvement.
In Minnesota, nearly 23% of the state is free of drought or abnormal dryness. About 39% remains abnormally dry, while 25% is in moderate drought and just over 13% experiencing severe drought. No areas of extreme or exceptional drought are reported. In south central Minnesota, most of the region remains free of drought, although pockets of abnormally dry conditions continue, with moderate drought found farther north across central Minnesota.
In Iowa, nearly 70% of the state is free of drought concerns. About 30% is classified as abnormally dry and just over 11% remain in moderate drought. No severe, extreme or exceptional drought is reported anywhere in the state. Across north central Iowa, including much of the Kossuth County Area, conditions are generally free of drought, with abnormally dry conditions lingering farther west and northwest.
