Three area school districts are receiving funding to strengthen early literacy instruction.
The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation, through the Mitchel Perrizo Jr. Leaders are Readers Fund, has awarded a total of $45,000 in grants to Blue Earth Area, Maple River and United South Central School Districts.
Each district received a $15,000 grant. Blue Earth Area Schools will use the funding to implement a new Functional Phonics and Morphology curriculum for students in Kindergarten through fifth grade and provide staff training that aligns with Minnesota’s Science of Reading requirements.
Maple River Schools will use its grant to launch a writing program and support summer reading intervention tutoring.
United South Central Public Schools will purchase phonics book set for classrooms to complement its existing Project Read curriculum and continue building students’ literacy skills.
The Leaders are Readers Fun was established in 2021 after Mike and Tami Hoffman donated $1 million through the Michael J. and Tamara Rae Hoffman Family Charitable Gift Fund. The fund honor Delavan native Mitchel Perrizo Jr., a World War II Veteran, former state legislator and public servant who championed the importance of reading throughout his life.
