Corn and soybean crops in Minnesota and Iowa continue to show strong condition ratings as the growing season advances, according to the latest USDA National Agriculture Statistic Service Crop Progress Report released Monday.
In Minnesota, 4% of the corn crop had reached the silking stage by July 5th, compared with 3% a week earlier and nearly matching the five year average of 5%. Corn condition remained strong, with 81% rated good to excellent, including 23% rated excellent.
In Iowa, 8% of the corn crop had silked, up from 1% the previous week but slightly behind the five year average of 10%. Iowa’s corn condition was among the strongest in the nation with 78% rated good to excellent, including 19% rated excellent.
Soybean development also continued to progress. In Minnesota, 41% of soybeans were blooming, ahead of the five year average of 29%, while 9% has begun setting pods, compared with the 3% average. Soybean condition was rated 79% good to excellent.
In Iowa, 37% of soybeans were blooming, ahead of the five year average of 31%, while 3% had reached the pod setting stage, just below the 5% average. Iowa soybean condition was rated 74% good to excellent.
