Emergency crews responded Tuesday to a structure fire at an apartment building near South Stockman Street and Jay Street in Elmore.
Initial reports indicated that a mother and child were trapped in a second floor apartment and were visible at a window as firefighters worked to reach them. The child and family pets were able to get out of the apartment before firefighters completed a rescue. The mother was later able to safely exit the building as well.
Multiple ambulances were requested at the scene, along with mutual aid from Frost Fire and a precautionary request for the Blue Earth Fire Department.
Authorities say an elderly woman, the child’s mother and the child were transported to the hospital for evaluation. The approximately 5 year old child was reportedly suffering from smoke inhalation. The mother was also showing signs of smoke inhalation, including persistent coughing.
Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire and prevent further spread. No information on the cause of the fire or the extent of damage to the building has been released.
The incident remains under investigation.
