Farmers in both Minnesota and Iowa continue to make strong planting progress this spring, according to the latest USDA Crop Progress report released Monday.
In Minnesota, corn planting reached 86% complete as of Sunday, slightly behind last year’s 90% but well ahead of the five year average of 74%. Corn emergence in Minnesota was reported at 36%, ahead of the average pace of 33%.
Across the border in Iowa, corn planting reached 88% complete, nearly matching last year’s 89% and ahead of the five year average of 82%. Corn emergence was reported at 46%, topping the average of 43%.
Soybean planting in Minnesota also moved quickly, reaching 74% complete. That compares to 77% a year ago and a five year average of 53%. Soybean emergence stood at 22%, well ahead of the normal pace of 14%.
Iowa soybean planting was 80% complete, just behind last year’s 81% but well ahead of the five year average of 68%. Soybean emergence in Iowa reached 28%, ahead of the normal pace of 25%.
