The City of Wells is weighing whether to repair or replace its aging City Hall, as decades of wear begin to take a toll on the 65 year old building.
City officials say the list of issues has been growing for some time.
Among the concerns, a leaking roof and sewage system, frequent flooding in a former basement dance studio, and an outdated HVAC and ventilation system. The building is also not ADA complaint, may contain asbestos in floor tiles and includes an old police gun range in the basement that could require lead abatement.
Officials say the building also no longer fits the city’s needs. Over the years, Wells has added staff and services, including a City Administrator and Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Services, that the facility was never designed to accommodate.
A 2024 assessment estimated renovation costs could range from about $1.3 million to $2.8 million. No final price tag has been set and city leaders are still evaluating whether renovating or building new would be more cost-effective.
While any final decision is still likely years away, the city hopes early discussions will help residents begin thinking about the future of City Hall.
