The detour for the Highway 22 and Highway 109 construction project in Wells will begin tomorrow, weather permitting, as crew start work on the 2026-27 improvement project, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The 2026-27 improvement project includes pavement and utility improvements, upgraded bicycle and pedestrian accommodations and new safety features such as slightly narrower lanes, intersection changes, curb extension and bike lanes.
Highway 109 in Wells will be closed to through traffic from west of Rose Hill Cemetery to Highway 22 throughout the 2026 construction season. Highway 22 will also be closed to through traffic from the northern intersection with Highway 109 south of 1st Street Southwest.
Through traffic will be detoured to Highway 22, 109, Interstate 90 and Faribault County Road 21. Local access to homes and businesses will be maintained during construction.
Construction is expected to continue until the Fall of 2026. Schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
