The Granada-Huntley-East Chain School Board has approved a bid from Alpha Wireless to install updated cameras in all classrooms, moving forward with a plan that had been previously approved by teachers but delayed due to potential building referendum.
The district had originally received approval for classroom cameras two years ago, but the project was paused while the district considered a larger building project. With that process no longer delaying the work, the district is now ready to proceed with upgrading its camera system.
The district reviewed four bids for the project. Alpha Wireless submitted the winning bid at about $80,000, which includes installation.
According to the district, the new system will significantly improve upon current hallway cameras, offering higher resolution imaging and advanced features such as AI assisted tracking between cameras and improved zoom capabilities.
District leaders said the cameras are intended to assist administrators in reviewing incidents and improving documentation of events in classrooms. They also noted that the system is expected to encourage greater student accountability.
Officials emphasized that the camera will be stored on secure district servers with access limited to authorized personnel and that they will primarily be used for investigative purposes when disciplinary issues arise.
