Employees at 3M in Fairmont learned last week the company plans to permanently close the facility, ending nearly 80 years of operations in the community.
The plant, which has been operating since 1946, is expected to discontinue production by early 2027. 3M Global Senior Manager of Issues and Communications Allie Fjelstad said the closure will impact about 80 positions, though operations will continue into early next year. She said the company plans to offer severance and transition support for affected employees.
No information has been released on the future of the nearly 150 thousand square foot building on North State Street and 3M has no said whether other locations could close.
