The Fairmont City Council is seeking an independent engineering assessment of the steel beams at the Martin County Arean as a dispute over repair costs continues.
The disagreement comes after the city approved one year agreements with the Martin County Fair Board and Fairmont Youth Hockey Association. The Fair Board rejected its agreement after the council amended it to exclude the cost of beam repairs.
City Attorney David Assaf says past agreements describe the arena as jointly owned by the city and Fair Board, raising questions about ownership and responsibility for repairs.
Council member say they want to know what repairs are needed, how much they’ll cost and who should pay before committing city funds.
The council unanimously approved seeking proposals for an engineering assessment. Members Wayne Hasek and James Kotewa were also appointed to participate in possible negotiations or mediation in a three to two vote.
