The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows drought conditions remain widespread across Minnesota, while Iowa saw improvement over the past week.
In Minnesota, about 88% of the state is considered abnormally dry or worse. More than 75% is in moderate drought or worse, while 44% is experiencing severe drought. A small area along the western border has reached extreme drought.
Conditions are considerably better in Iowa. Nearly 70% of the state is drought free, up from about 63% last week. Moderate drought covers roughly 20% of Iowa, primarily across the northwest, while less than one percent remains in severe drought.
The Drought Monitor says recent heavy rainfall helped improved conditions across portions of Iowa, while Minnesota saw a mix of improvement and deterioration.
