The Martin County Board of Commissioners are keeping the current wheelage tax in place, at least for now.
County Engineer Kevin Peyman told commissioners the ten dollar annual tax on vehicle registrations brings in about $220,000 a year and has generated nearly $2.8 million since 2013. He said the money helps stretch state aid dollars for road and bridge projects.
Some commissioners argued the county should eliminate the tax now and a half cent transportation sales tax is generating additional revenue. Others said construction costs continue to rise and warned losing the funding could delay future projects.
The board plans to revisit the issue in July of 2027.
