The Blue Earth City Council on Monday approved a conditional use permit for a new child care center that will operate in the former Little Luke’s building near St. Luke’s.
The permit allows Tri-Valley Head Start to use the facility during the summer months to provide child care services for children of migrant workers in the area. The proposal was reviewed by the Planning Commissioner during a public hearing last week. No members of the public spoke during the hearing.
The council approved the resolution authorizing the conditional use permit on a 6-0 vote, with Council Member John Huisman abstaining.
The council also approved a registration application for a micro cannabis business license for Alpine Leaf, which plans to operate at a Main Street location.
City Administrator Dawn Collins told the council the applicant submitted all required state documentation, paid the necessary fees and received a conditional microbusiness license from the state, pending local approval.
Council Member Huisman asked whether the city receives criminal background information on applicants from the state. Collins said the state conducts its own background checks but does not share the results with local governments, only whether the applicant has received conditional approval.
The council approved the Alpine Leaf registration on a 6-1 vote.
