An armed suspect was taken into custody Monday morning following a pursuit, exchange of gunfire and extensive law enforcement search in rural Faribault County, near Amboy.
According to law enforcement radio traffic, officers were responding to a report involving a vehicle that had allegedly been taken during a possible armed robbery at a residence. The vehicle was described as a blue Pontiac Grand Prix.
Officers initially located the vehicle and maintained visual contact, but the driver accelerated away in an attempt to flee. During the pursuit, a Minnesota State Patrol Trooper reported that officers attempted to deploy stop sticks when shots were fired from inside the vehicle and into the air.
The suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot while armed with a handgun and carrying a walking cane. Authorities said the suspect continued to pose a threat, reportedly firing shots in the direction of officers and making repeated threats against law enforcement personnel and their families.
Because of the suspect’s proximity to a nearby farmhouse and the heightened danger to responding officers, the Tactical Response Team was requested to assist. Additional armored vehicles and ballistic shields were brought to the scene as officers worked to contain the scene.
The suspect’s last known location was reported near the intersection of 529th Avenue and 103rd Street outside Amboy. A Minnesota State Patrol helicopter was requested to aid in the search but was unable to respond because of weather conditions. Faribault County Sheriff’s deputies instead deployed drones to help locate the suspect.
After an extensive search, officers located the suspect and took him into custody at approximately 9:48am. Authorities used a taser during the arrest. The firearm believed to have been used during the incident was also recovered.
No injuries to law enforcement officers or members of the public were immediately reported. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information, including the suspect’s identity and potential charges, has not been released.
