The City of Blue Earth is reminding property owners to keep lawns mowed and weeds under control as the growing season gets underway.
Under city code, grass and weeds are not allowed to exceed five inches in height. Any vegetation taller than that is considered a public nuisance.
If a violation is found, the city will notify the property owner, occupant or agent and provide three days to cut the grass or weeds. Property owners also have the right to appeal the abatement order within that three day period.
If the nuisance is not corrected and no appeal is filed, the city may arrange for the property to be mowed and bill the owner for the cost of the work.
Unpaid mowing bills that remain outstanding after September 1st, along with any accrued interest, can be certified to the County Auditor and collected as a special assessment against the property.
City officials encourage residents to regularly maintain their lawns to avoid enforcement action and additional costs.
