The Blue Earth Area School District will host a referendum information meeting later this week as voters prepare to decide on two proposed bond questions totaling more than $73 million.
The meeting will take place on Thursday May 28th, at the Pemberton Gym, beginning at 5:30pm. Residents will have an opportunity to visit wit school board members, ask question about the referendum and tour the current Pre K – 7 school building.
Voters in the district will head to the polls August 11th to consider the two bond referendum questions. Question 1 asks voters to approve $63.31 million for construction of a new Pre K -6 elementary school. Question 2 would seek an additional $10.3 million for construction and equipping of a multipurpose space at the new elementary school site, along with HVAC upgrades at the high school. The second question would only take effect if the first question passes.
District officials say the projects are intended to address long term facility concerns, including aging infrastructure, accessibility issues and outdated learning spaces.
According to the district, portions of the current Pre k -7 building are nearly 100 years old and have experienced ongoing problems, including failing building systems, broken pipes and accessibility challenges. Consultants hired by the district determined renovation of the existing building would not be cost effective because of the structure’s age, layout and other challenges.
Additional information and facility study findings are available through Blue Earth Area Schools website.
