Students at Blue Earth Area Middle School will spend Wednesday giving back to communities across Faribault County during the school’s annual Service Day.
Middle school students and eighth graders will travel to parks, towns and community site throughout the county to complete a variety of service projects. Morning Meeting groups and home rooms will participate in activities such as painting picnic tables, planting flower planters, cleaning park shelters, clearing brush and other community improvement projects.
School officials says the service learning event is designed to strengthen ties between students and their communities, while teaching the importance of helping others.
According to organizers, service learning helps increase connectedness between young people, schools and communities, while also building awareness of local needs and concerns. Students also gain experience working cooperatively with others and taking on leadership roles.
Projects will take place at several locations across Faribault County, including Prairie River Camp in Bricelyn, Pihl’s Park in Wells, Woods Lake, Riverside and Calvary Cemeteries in Blue Earth, the Faribault County Fairgrounds, Putnam Park and the Blue Earth Swimming Pool, Steinberg Park, the Blue Earth Fire Department and various cleanup sites throughout Blue Earth.
Students will also complete projects in the communities of Elmore, Frost and Winnebago.
