Faribault County voters will soon decide how their County Recorder is selected as a special election has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 14th following the retirement of longtime Recorder Sherry Asmus.
After Asmus stepped down at the end of 2024, the County Board appointed interim replacements to fill the roll, which is currently held by Kelly Hendrickson.
Now, commissioners are split on whether the position should remain elected or become appointed. Supporters of appointment says it allows for oversight, performance evaluations and accountability, something not possible with an elected official who typically serves a four year term and can only be removed under strict legal circumstances.
State law allows this type of change only when there is a vacancy, which is why the question is being brought forward now.
The special election on Tuesday will give residents the final say on whether the recorder position stays elected or shifts to an appointed roll.
