The Blue Earth City Council has approved an agreement that could bring a new kind of fertilizer production to the area.
Council members signed off on a memorandum of understanding with TalusAg to develop a green ammonia facility at the West Industrial Park.
The project would use electricity to produce low carbon fertilizer, with an initial capacity of about 23 megawatts, making TalusAg a major customer of Blue Earth Light and Water.
To support development, more than three million dollars in transmission upgrades would be needed. TalusAg is expected to cover a portion of those costs, currently estimated at around $660,000, along with other project related expenses.
Under the agreement, the company would purchase land, install and operate the system and reduce power use during peak demand periods.
The project will not rely on taxpayer funding and residents will not be responsible for the costs.
TalusAg has also committed up to $100,000 for emergency response equipment or annual contributions to community projects over the next decade.
The agreement is non-binding as both sides work toward a final deal.
