The United South Central School Board is beginning its annual budget planning process, with early projections showing a potential shortfall for the upcoming school year.
Superintendent Taylor Topinka says the district is currently projecting a deficit of about $200,000 for the 2026-27 school year, which begins in July. However, he notes the estimate does not yet account for possible action from the state legislature, which could improve the district’s financial outlook.
Topinka says much of the March board meeting was focused on early budget preparation, as well as routine policy review. The board also began initial discussions on staffing recommendations for next year.
He says this time of year is a transaction period for the district, as administrators work to finish the current school year while also planning ahead for the next.
In addition to financial and planning discussions, the board recognized several students for qualifying for state level competition in gymnastics, wrestling and robotics.
The next United South Central School Board meeting is scheduled for April 21st in Bricelyn.
