The Fairmont City Council is weighing how to spend roughly $12 million in Local Option Sales Tax funds after a planned community center project was cancelled late last year.
The money was originally set aside following a 2016 ballot measure, but with the project no longer moving forward, the city has been gathering public input on alternative uses.
City Staff say suggestions generally fall into three categories, smaller projects like park improvements and splash pads, mid sized ideas such as repairs to the local opera house and larger proposals including a field house or ice arena.
Council members are now trying to decide whether to invest in one major project or spread the funds across several smaller ones. Key questions remain about whether the money can legally be used for certain projects and whether partnerships, such as with the Fairmont School District, are feasible.
The council plans to gather more information before holding a work session in the coming months to narrow down its options.
