The City of Winnebago is embracing its “Small Town, Big Heart” motto with a new public art project aimed at building community pride and attracting visitors.
An 8 foot by 8 foot blue metal heart now stands in front of the Winnebago Municipal Center, marking the first installation in what organizers hope will become a series of hearts displayed throughout the city.
The project is designed to highlight local pride and encourage travelers passing through town to stop and explore. Organizers say the long term goal is to strengthen community identity while showcasing what Winnebago has to offer.
To support future installations, volunteers will host a spaghetti lunch fundraiser from 11am to 1pm Sunday at the Winnebago Municipal Center. Organizers hope to raise up to $3,000 through goodwill donations.
Funds raised will go toward creating additional hearts to be placed at various locations around town, including the swimming pool, library, museum and near the city’s welcome signs.
The first heart was installed in December and was created by Johnathon Hynes and Matt Johnson. Future hearts are expected to vary in shape and size, with the project likely spanning several years as funding becomes available.
