The Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin tree removal along Highway 22 and 109 in Wells on Monday in preparation for an upcoming reconstruction project.
Motorists can expect shoulder and intermittent lane closures during the work and should watch for flaggers directing traffic. The tree clearing is expected to take about a week.
The clearing is preliminary work for the 2026-27 reconstruction of Highway 22 and 109 through Wells. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid to late April and continue through the fall of 2026, weather permitting. Traffic will be detoured during construction.
The project includes pavement and utility improvements, upgraded bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, and added safety features such as slightly narrower lanes, intersection modifications, curb extensions and bike lanes.
A construction open house is scheduled for Thursday, April 2nd, from 4-6pm at the Wells Community Center, 189 2nd Street SE. There will be no formal presentation and residents may stop by at their convenience. Representatives from MnDOT and the contractor will be available to answer questions about timelines, detours and other project details.
