At a special meeting on Monday, the Faribault County Board of Commissioners approved an ordinance maintaining the county’s shotgun only designation for the 2026 deer hunting season.
The measure passed on a 4-1 vote after a public hearing was held during the meeting.
The decision follows ongoing discussion in recent months about whether the county should shift to allowing rifles during the deer season. Supporters of keeping the shotgun only rule have cited safety concerns due to the county’s relatively flat terrain and population density, while others have argued that modern rifles are safe and would give hunters more flexibility.
Monday’s vote keeps the current regulations in place for at least another season.
