A Winnebago man is facing a gross misdemeanor domestic assault charge after authorities say he ripped a door off its hinges during an argument, causing it to strike a woman in the head.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Faribault County District Court, officers were called to a residence in Winnebago on February 8th for a reported disturbance. When police arrived, they met with the occupants, including a woman identified in the complaint as the victim.
The victim told officers an argument occurred, during which 30 year old Mathew James McGuire allegedly became upset and ripped a door and its hinges out of the doorway. She reported the door struck her in the head. Officers observed a visible mark consistent with her account, the complaint states.
Court documents indicate the victim provided police with a video recording that allegedly shows McGuire ripping the door frame from the opening. The complaint notes the video appears to show the door was open at the time.
When questioned, McGuire allegedly told officers he had been locked out of a bedroom and was trying to check on his children. However, investigators said that statement was inconsistent with the video evidence.
McGuire is charged with one count of gross misdemeanor domestic assault (subsequent violation). Court records show he has a prior qualified domestic violence-related conviction within the past 10 years.
Bail was set a $1,000 cash with condition.
