Facilities planning was a major focus of the Blue Earth Area School Board’s February meeting.
Following a recap of January’s work session, the board directed Superintendent Mandy Fletcher to begin preparing a resolution related to a potential facilities referendum. The referendum could be brought to voters a early as August, though no final timeline or ballot language has been approved.
District leaders continue to cite aging buildings and long term maintenance needs identified in a facilities assessment completed last spring. Board members emphasized the need to balance facility improvements with the financial impact on taxpayers, including agricultural landowners.
The district is continuing an outreach effort to educate the public on facility conditions and costs. Presentations have already been made to the Blue Earth, Delavan and Frost City Councils, with additional meeting planned with other City Councils, County Commissioners and Community Groups.
Fletcher said community input will remain a key part of the process as facilities planning moves forward.
