Rifle deer hunting continues to be a hot topic for Faribault County residents and commissioners alike. Commissioner Greg Young said the issue sparks debate across the community, particularly in rural areas where hunters are most affected. Under current rules, the county uses a slug and handgun system, but neighboring counties, including Martin County, are moving toward high powered rifles.
The county held a work session at the Ag Center last month, drawing around 25 residents split roughly 50/50 on whether to allow rifles. Young said another session is scheduled for February 23rd to gather more public input before a decision is made. The Wells Gund Club will also host a meeting on February 18th to discuss the matter.
“We want to hear from as many people as possible before making a decision,” Young said, noting the county must finalize any changes before the March 1st deadline and provide proper notice ahead of a vote. This discussion highlights the balance commissioners must strike between tradition, safety and evolving hunting regulations.
