Governor Tim Walz has signed two executive orders focused on gun violence prevention and public safety in Minnesota.
The orders create a Statewide Safety Council, which will include representatives from law enforcement, education, mental health and community organizations. The council is tasked with developing recommendations aimed at preventing mass violence, domestic terrorism and politically motivated attacks and will advise the governor on policy and funding priorities.
The executive orders also direct state agencies to take several additional steps, including expanding education and training related to Extreme Risk Protection Orders, increasing safe firearm storage education in partnership with schools and collecting data on firearm related insurance claims through the Department of Commerce.
According to the Governor’s Office, the actions follow discussions during town halls held across Minnesota and come as lawmakers prepare for the next legislative session. The orders also follow stalled legislative debate over gun safety measures earlier this year.
The Governor’s Office says the executive actions build on previous public safety initiatives already in place.
