The Fairmont City Council began initial discussions Monday on how to use the roughly $7.5 million in Local Option Sale Tax Funds collected since 2017. The money had previously been designated for a community center, but the Fairmont Community Center Foundation recently stepped away from the project.
The Council was presented several options for moving forward, including forming a council appointed task force, relying on community led collaboration, creating a council and staff task force or pursuing another approach.
Council members agreed that citizen involvement is essential and supported holding a work session. They also noted that the funds cannot be used for repairs to the Fairmont Opera House because the city does not operate the facility.
The council directed staff and the Taft Law Firm to compile a list of eligible projects and schedule a work session no later than February 1st. While some members stressed that a community center is still possible, the council emphasized the need to evaluate options and determine the best use of the funds.
