Minnesotans should be wary of scam text messages claiming to be from the Minnesota Department of Revenue.
The department warns that the recipients of the scam texts to not click on the hyperlink if they receive a text with the following content; “Your refund request has been processed and approved. Please provide accurate payment information by (DATE). Funds will be deposited into your bank account or mailed to you via paper check within 1 to 2 business days. Failure to submit the required payment information by (DATE) will result in permanent forfeiture of this refund under Minnesota Statute 5747.11.”
The texts are coming from a source outside of the department, a Minnesota Department of Revenue press release said. The department never sends unsolicited communications asking Minnesotans to update personal or financial information. Also, the department’s systems and taxpayer data are not at risk.
Those receiving the scam texts should refrain from clinking the hyperlink; report the text as junk/spam on their phone and delete it; contact their banking institution if they clicked the link and input their information.
