A Mapleton man was found dead in his apartment early Tuesday morning.
According to the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 2:11am, deputies and troopers responded to a vehicle off the roadway on Highway 22, south of Terrace View Golf Course. A witness said the driver, later identified as 47 year old Troy Blane Almhjeld left the vehicle walking northbound on Highway 22, but law enforcement was unable to locate him.
Deputies then checked the vehicle’s registered owner’s residence, identified as 71 year old Blaine Lars Almhjeld in Mapleton, and found him deceased inside his home with obvious signs of trauma. Local law enforcement was aware that Troy Almhjed lived with his father Blaine Almhjeld and began efforts to locate him.
Law enforcement continued searching the area of Highway 22, south of the Terrace View Golf Course. Troy Almhjeld approached deputies during the search and was taken into custody.
Troy Almhjeld remains in custody pending a referral to the Blue Earth County Attorney’s Office to consider charges, including second degree murder.
The investigation remains active in conjunction with the Mapleton Police Department, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office.
