The Faribault County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday and received an update from the Recorder’s Office on a free service called Property Fraud Alert to help residents protect their property from fraud.
Property fraud occurs when someone illegally transfers a property deed into their name and takes out loans or other financial actions in the owner’s name. Often, homeowners don’t fined out until months later when they receive notices form lenders about missed payments.
Property Fraud Alert works by notifying property owners immediately, via email or text, if a deed transfer occurs. While the transfer itself can’t be stopped by law, early notification allows property owners to respond quickly and prevent serious financial consequences.
Residents can visit the Recorder’s Office for a quick setup or go online to the Faribault County website. On the website, there’s a Property Fraud Alert button in the lower left hand corner of the Recorder’s Office page to complete registration in minutes. Officials say many residents have already signed up and appreciate the added peace of find this free service provides.
