The Fairmont City Council on Monday approved an $8.12 million road improvement plan for 2026, funded through grants, special assessments and bonding.
Two reconstruction projects and 12 mill and overlay projects are scheduled for next summer and fall. Under city policy, 70% of costs are paid by the city and 30% by property owners. Civil Engineer Tyler Cowing says reconstruction assessments average about $112 per front foot, while overlays run about $15 per foot.
One major change includes narrowing Blue Earth Avenue from four lanes to three, adding a roundabout at Prairie Avenue.
In a separate 3-2 vote, the council approved working with Short Elliot Hendrickson on a downtown improvement plan, despite a committee recommendation for another firm. Council members cited stronger community engagement in SEH’s proposal.
