Blue Earth Area Schools is facing nearly $48 million in urgent facility needs, according to a recent assessment shared with community groups.
Superintendent Mandy Fletcher says a study by Kraus-Anderson found more than $42 million in critical repairs at the district’s Pre K – 7 building, including aging plumbing, HVAC systems and interior construction tied to asbestos abatement. Portions of the building are up to 100 years old and officials say recent water line breaks and boiler issues highlight growing infrastructure concerns.
At the 31 year old High School, about $6 million in priority needs were identified, largely tied to rooftop HVAC units that are now beyond their expected lifespan and daily maintenance demands.
Both buildings also lack secured entrances that meet current safety standards.
Despite a projected population decline in the area, district data show enrollment is expected to grow about 8% over the next decade. School board members are continuing discussions on how best to address the critical needs.
