The Fairmont City Council on Monday opted to delay a decision on hiring a new City Administrator, voting instead to seek additional information on finalist Jason Baker.
Baker, the City Administrator in Oronoco, emerged as the preferred candidate after interviews last month and has since passed a comprehensive background check, according to Human Resources Manager Rachel Viesselman.
Some council members were ready to move forward with an employment offer, citing the completed background review and concerns about losing the candidate. Others urged caution, questioning Baker’s experience transitioning from a smaller city to Fairmont and requesting access to recent performance evaluations.
Following debate, the council voted 4-1 to schedule a special meeting on February 19th, beginning with a potential closed session to review non public information related to Baker, followed by an open session for possible action.
