A robotics team at North Union High School is expanding hands on STEM learning opportunities for students with help from a new NASA grant.
North Union received $6,300 in NASA funding to support its robotics program, allowing students to design, build and program competition ready robots. The robots can measure up to 30 inches by 30 inches, stand as tall as four feet and weigh as much as 125 pounds.
The program provides students at the small school with access to STEM training and experience working collaboratively in a team environment.
Members of the North Union Robotics team take on a variety of roles, including robot design, fabrication and programming. Other students focus on logistics such as communication, social media, community outreach and securing sponsorships from local businesses and industry partners.
North Union was one of four Iowa high schools statewide to receive NASA robotics grants, with the funding helping expand advanced learning opportunities for students.
