The Martin County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved a $13,724.77 grant request from Habitat for Humanity of Martin-Faribault Counties for a housing project in Sherburn, the first application approved through the county’s Local Housing Trust Fund.
The funding will cover street assessments for a property at 211 Prairie Street North, where an existing home will be moved onto the lot and fully rehabilitated. The total project cost is estimated at $312,444.77.
The project, which has the support of the Local Housing Trust Fund, will be competed in partnership with the Martin County West School District. In addition to creating affordable housing, the effort will provide hands on learning opportunities for students.
The home is expected to be transported to Sherburn this summer, with foundation work completed in time for students to begin work when school resumes in September. The project also addresses a shortage of skilled trade workers and reflects a broader focus on expanding housing options throughout Martin County.
The City of Sherburn has donated the lot and waived its asking fee, though street assessments totaling about $13,000 remain. The board confirmed the assessment costs and approved the full amount requested.
