The deadline has come for Mayo Clinic Health Systems’s consolidation plan, with six rural campuses and a surgery department in Albert Lea closed as of Wednesday.
Mayo announced the closures in September, affecting facilities in Belle Plaine, Caledonia, Montgomery, North Mankato, Saint Peter and Wells. The system says the move is aimed at improving quality and flexibility at its remaining rural locations.
Montgomery City Administrator Brian Heck says the news wasn’t unexpected, noting ongoing challenges in finding medical practitioners and support staff, a problem he sys many rural providers are facing across the region.
