The Blue Earth Area School Board held its December meeting on Monday night and held the annual Truth in Taxation hearing.
Fiscal Services Coordinator Alan Wilhelmi opened the meeting with a detailed explanation of how the school levy is set each year, noting that the process begins internally in August before the releases its preliminary levy in September. Because levy figures typically fluctuate several times between September and December, the district, like most entities, certifies its preliminary levy “at the maximum” to allow for adjustments.
The board approved its final levy at a 3.7% increase, a figure district officials described as reasonable give inflationary pressures. Last year, the district’s levy actually decreased, making the current year to year increase reflect both the prior dip and this year’s certified amount.
