The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) has approved 23 new grants totaling $200,000 to help strengthen communities of 10,000 residents or fewer across its 20 county region. The funding, part of SMIF’s Small Town Grant program, supports local projects designed to enhance culture, education, economic vitality and community connectedness.
The 2025 grantees proposed a wide range of community focused initiative, from welcome programs for new residents to historical restoration, youth support, arts and culture, food security and accessible recreation.
Those receiving funding in the area include Blue Earth, which will receive $8,338 to develop Experience Blue Earth, a storytelling project centered on local business owners.
Elmore, receiving $10,000 to install a free community sports equipment locker system.
Bricelyn, where Community Partners of Faribault County will use $10,000 to expand a beautification project and develop a community garden addressing food insecurity.
Minnesota Warriors Volleyball in Winnebago, awarded $10,000 to host inclusive game nights and adaptive sports events.
Martin County West Schools will use $10,000 to build the Maverick Prairie Path and Outdoor Classroom, accessible to all community members.
With the latest round of awards, SMIF has now supported 161 projects and invested $1.37 million in small towns throughout southern Minnesota. The program is supported in part by a memorial donation honoring Paul O. Johnson, whose family continues his vision for vibrant rural communities.
