The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service released the crop progress report for Minnesota and Iowa for the week ending May 18th.
It was another warm week across Minnesota, this time accompanied by moderate rainfall. Planting progress continued to move quickly. Iowa corn and soybean planting made rapid progress. There were scattered reports of replanting as early planted crops in some areas had struggled to emerge with the dry conditions.
Corn planting in Minnesota was 92% complete reaching that level 13 days sooner than 2024 and 10 days sooner than the five year average. Fifty eight percent of the 2025 corn crop had emerged, putting emergence six days ahead of average.
Iowa corn planted reached 91% complete, 12 days ahead of last year and 4 days ahead of the 5 year average. Fifty eight percent of corn had emerged, 5 days ahead of last year’s pace and 3 days ahead of normal.
Soybeans in Minnesota were 81% planted, about 10 days earlier than average and more than two weeks ahead of 2024. At 32%, soybean emergence was about six days ahead of the five year average.
Eighty-four percent of the expected soybean crop in Iowa has been planted just over 2 weeks ahead of last year and 1 week ahead of the 5 year average. Soybeans emerged reached 42%, 8 days ahead of last year and 6 days ahead of normal.
